In May 2010, 19 senior leaders participated in the 2010 Canadian College of Health Leaders (previously known as the Canadian College of Health Service Executives) Sweden study tour. The majority of participants were senior leaders from public and private health care organizations across Canada. One participant was from the United States of America and another from the United Kingdom. The 19th participant was the recipient of the inaugural Emerging Health Leader Sweden Study Tour Scholarship. The award recipient was asked to author this report outlining what he learned during the Sweden study tour regarding leadership from the perspective of an emerging leader.
This article provides an overview of the 2010 Sweden Study Tour, an overview of the LEADS in a Caring Environment Leadership Competency Framework (hereinafter referred to as the LEADS Framework) and an analysis of examples of leadership in the Swedish Healthcare System. Discussions focus on lessons learned from the perspective of an emerging leader.

En mai 2010, 19 cadres supérieurs ont participé au voyage d’étude en Suède organisé par le Collège canadien des leaders en santé (précédemment connu sous le nom du Collège canadien des directeurs de services de santé). La plupart des participants étaient de hauts dirigeants d’organisations de soins de santé publiques et privées de toutes les régions du Canada, alors qu’un venait des États-Unis et un autre, du Royaume-Uni. Le dix-neuvième participant était le récipiendaire de la première bourse pour voyage d’études en Suède de l’organisme Emerging Health Leaders. On a demandé au récipiendaire de rédiger ce rapport décrivant ce qu’il a appris pendant son voyage d’études en Suède concernant le leadership du point de vue d’un jeune leader.
Le présent article donne un aperçu du voyage d’études en Suède de 2010, une vue d’ensemble du cadre des compétences LEADS… Diriger dans un milieu de soins (ci-après appelé le cadre LEADS) et une analyse d’exemples de leadership dans le système suédois de la santé. L’auteur se concentre sur les leçons apprises du point de vue d’un jeune leader.

Sweden has an excellent health system that Canada can learn from. They are very innovative and able to evolve their system quickly to improve service. They also benefit from having a national health system that can set consistent direction across the country.
