The new 14-month team-based EXTRA fellowship builds on key curriculum elements that have been successful to date (individual skills and competencies in using research to lead improvement), with a sharper focus on effective techniques, leadership tactics, and organizational strategies to initiate and implement improvement initiatives by teams of interdisciplinary healthcare professionals and policy-makers in leadership positions.

Board elections will be required this year for the provinces of New Brunswick and Newfoundland & Labrador. All certified members from these provinces are eligible to nominate candidates, for their province, to stand for election to the Board of Directors for the 2013 to 2016 term.

Remembering Dr. Murray Nixon / À la mémoire du Dr Murray Nixon

The College wishes to acknowledge the contribution of Dr. Murray Nixon, who passed away in Halifax on November 24, 2012, at the age of 77, to our organization and to the field of health leadership. Murray was an Associate Professor of the Faculty of Medicine at Dalhousie University. At the time of his retirement in 2011, he worked in the Department of Family Medicine and Department of Medicine in Geriatrics. He was a well-known physician nationally and internationally for his work in home care. Murray worked as a peer reviewer for the journal of the Canadian College of Health Leaders for 10 years, and was Past Chair of Accreditation Canada and the Canadian Home Care Association. He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Dorothy, four children and five grandchildren.

Increasing accountability to drive improvement

Governments need to be more strategic in their approach to healthcare and ensure greater accountability for the performance of their health systems. They can start by agreeing on a pan-Canadian vision for the health of Canadians and the services to be provided, accompanied by explicit policy goals, evidence-based performance targets, and more transparent public reporting.

Winnipeg
The Manitoba Chapter, with the support of Integ Management and Support Services, held its Annual Dinner on April 10 during the Manitoba Health Organization’s Conference. More than 130 members and their guests attended and heard an up-date on College activities and programs from Provincial Director Garry Mattin and Treasurer Dieter Kuntz, and a stimulating presentation by Dr. Connie Curran.
