Creating and sustaining value: Building a culture of continuous improvement

In 2011, the Toronto East General Hospital (TEGH) began its journey towards developing a culture of continuous improvement. TEGH evolved to an organization-wide improvement system through a commitment to fiscal responsibility, practical innovation, team-based performance management, and daily management systems.

This culture enabled the TEGH to achieve the lowest Emergency Department wait times for admitted patients in its local health integration network and reduce length of stay for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease by 46%.

Mr. Racette has been an active member of the College since 1977, receiving his CHE designation in 1984. He has served on the Board of Directors, the Manitoba and Midnight Sun Chapter Executives and in various committees. In 2005 he was awarded the Leadership Recognition Award from the Manitoba chapter.

Corporate social responsibility and hospitals: US theory, Japanese experiences, and lessons for other countries

This paper examines the role that corporate social responsibility can play in advancing hospital management. Corporate social responsibility is the integration of social and environmental concerns within business operations. The authors discuss how corporate social responsibility can help hospitals and provide suggestions to hospitals in deciding which corporate social responsibility initiatives to pursue.

Facilitating emergent change in a healthcare setting

During my doctoral research, I identified new ways of thinking about complexity in organizations. This involved embracing the capacity of complex systems to find their own form of order and coherence, often referred to as self-organization, and then asking the question, “What can organizational leaders do to create the systems and structures that would facilitate emergent change?”
