Sweden - A Star Performer in the Eyes of an Emerging Health Leader / La Suède : Un des pays les plus performants aux yeux d’un leader montant en santé

The Canadian College of Health Leaders, ARAMARK Healthcare and Emerging Health Leaders are pleased to jointly release Zahida Esmail’s report: Sweden - A Star Performer in the Eyes of an Emerging Health Leader: Lessons in Quality and Patient Safety.

Zahida Esmail, BSc (Pharm), MHA was the recipient of the 2012 Emerging Health Leader Scholarship and was invited to participate on the Sweden Study Tour, which was held from April 22 – 27, 2012. The study tour brought together a small group of Canadian health care leaders to explore the current developments in Sweden’s health services policy and the organization of their health care system. The intent of the study tour is to provide a forum for the exchange of information, ideas, and experiences that will foster relationships between Canadians and their Swedish counterparts.

The 2013 National Awards Program boasts 14 awards honouring leaders in healthcare, including senior executives, emerging leaders, administrative and operational teams, nurses, students and more.

Over the next few issues of Communiqué we will be profiling the various awards and calling for your nominations. Award recipients will receive paid travel and accommodations, and a complimentary registration to attend the National Health Leadership Conference. Award presentations will be held at the College’s National Awards Gala, the Annual General Meeting and at the National Health Leadership Conference. All events are being held in Niagara Fall, Ontario June 9 – 11, 2013.

The ImagineNation Outcomes Challenge: Learn from Health IT Trailblazers

Since its launch in the fall of 2011, the ImagineNation Outcomes Challenge has sought to accelerate the use and spread of innovative solutions in health care information and communication technologies (ICT) with the potential to improve health care quality and the patient experience in Canada. Through this team-based Challenge, Infoway is offering one million dollars in awards to teams whose solutions are used most and those with the strongest growth in users from January 2012 to March 2013 in four Challenge categories: e-scheduling, patient access to health information, clinical synoptic reporting and medication reconciliation.

Finding Canada's healthcare equilibrium

Economic equilibrium, in which demand for health services is in balance with supply, is an elusive phenomenon in advanced healthcare systems worldwide, yet some countries have come closer to economic stasis than Canada. In 2008, the Euro-Canada Health Consumer Index ranked Canada 30th out of 30 countries studied for value for money. Wait times were Canada's weakest spot, and, in terms of system design, context, and economics, there was clear evidence that Canada's healthcare system was out of equilibrium.

Our history: Study Circle Program to begin in June / Notre histoire : Début des cercles d’étude en juin

Study Circles are small group, participant-led programs which examine a health administration topic over the course of six to eight meetings. Each meeting lasts between two and three hours. The content for the meetings come from a variety of readings outlined in a Study Guide provided to each member of the circle. Each selection is read by a single member, who prepares a report for the rest of the group. Discussion focuses on the practical application of the material covered.
