We would like to thank everyone who submitted a nomination for the 2013 National Awards Program. We are extremely pleased with the quality of the entries received this year and look forward to showcasing the award recipients in Niagara Falls, Ontario at the National Awards Gala and the College’s Annual General Meeting, both on Sunday, June 9, 2013. The 3M Health Care Quality Team Awards and the Robert Wood Johnson Awards will be presented at the National Health Leadership Conference on June 10 - 11, 2013.

You never know what will cause a chain reaction.
In the past year, I penned a pair of essays for Longwoods Publishing about the “The Ghost of Healthcare Despair”. The essays were well-received and resonated so strongly with Longwoods’ readers that they have invited me to create an entire series focused on “ghost busting” in healthcare.
For each essay in the series, I’ve invited a different co-author to join me as we explore the twists and turns in our healthcare system – with the Ghost of Healthcare Despair, who represents the voice of the cynic, not far behind.

Colour Outside the Lines: A Reverse Innovation Challenge for Canadian Health Systems is an open challenge to inspire current and future leaders to become active participants in shaping the transformation of our health care system. We are calling on all Canadians — students, health care professionals, entrepreneurs, IT specialists, patients, development workers and everyone in between — as well as innovators from around the world, to come together to generate reverse innovation projects that can address some of our biggest health challenges. Colour Outside the Lines is focused on finding innovations that are being successfully applied in the developing world/emerging markets that offer potential innovation to the Canadian Health System. The new 14-month team-based EXTRA fellowship builds on key curriculum elements that have been successful to date (individual skills and competencies in using research to lead improvement), with a sharper focus on effective techniques, leadership tactics, and organizational strategies to initiate and implement improvement initiatives by teams of interdisciplinary healthcare professionals and policy-makers in leadership positions.

Board elections will be required this year for the provinces of New Brunswick and Newfoundland & Labrador. All certified members from these provinces are eligible to nominate candidates, for their province, to stand for election to the Board of Directors for the 2013 to 2016 term.

Remembering Dr. Murray Nixon / À la mémoire du Dr Murray Nixon

The College wishes to acknowledge the contribution of Dr. Murray Nixon, who passed away in Halifax on November 24, 2012, at the age of 77, to our organization and to the field of health leadership. Murray was an Associate Professor of the Faculty of Medicine at Dalhousie University. At the time of his retirement in 2011, he worked in the Department of Family Medicine and Department of Medicine in Geriatrics. He was a well-known physician nationally and internationally for his work in home care. Murray worked as a peer reviewer for the journal of the Canadian College of Health Leaders for 10 years, and was Past Chair of Accreditation Canada and the Canadian Home Care Association. He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Dorothy, four children and five grandchildren.

Governments need to be more strategic in their approach to healthcare and ensure greater accountability for the performance of their health systems. They can start by agreeing on a pan-Canadian vision for the health of Canadians and the services to be provided, accompanied by explicit policy goals, evidence-based performance targets, and more transparent public reporting.

More than 130 members and their guests attended and heard an up-date on College activities and programs from Provincial Director Garry Mattin and Treasurer Dieter Kuntz, and a stimulating presentation by Dr. Connie Curran.
