A Reverse Innovation Challenge for Canadian Health Systems

Leaders in innovation from across the health sector have come together to issue an open challenge to all Canadians — students, health care professionals, entrepreneurs, IT specialists, patients, development workers and everyone in between - to use their ingenuity to help solve some of our greatest health system challenges. Colour Outside the Lines invites Canadians to submit reverse innovation ideas from emerging markets that can work as a health care innovation business model in Canada.

To find out more about the submission process, visit www.colouroutside.ca, where you will find application instructions, information on the evaluation process, as well as FAQs.  International and cross-sectoral collaboration is at the heart of this reverse innovation challenge. We encourage you to form a submission team that includes innovators from around the globe, and across industry and academic lines, to help strengthen your idea for reverse innovation. Innovation can come from anywhere; so can submissions for this challenge.

The role of values-based leadership in sustaining a culture of caring
Karen E. Faith

At the heart of healthcare are fundamental values like caring and compassion as well as the duty shared by healthcare organizations to address the care needs of those in their communities who are vulnerable, injured, or ill.

A concern being raised by some political analysts in Canada is that fundamental values are being challenged by current economic and political influences that are reshaping the landscape of healthcare in this country. Influences from industry, technology, and business have significantly shifted healthcare from its moral foundations.

Editorial by Randy Steffan

For those of us who make it our business of monitoring media reports on healthcare, the recent headlines suggest an intensely painful, future operating environment. Consider the following: "Layoffs possible as hospitals look for ways to cut deficits," "Radical remedy urged for ailing health system," "More beds may close, minister warns," "Debt forces hospital layoffs," and finally, as if any reminder was needed, "Hospital managers'  jobs are on the line."
